A repeatable plan for recording viola at home

Prepare the room, compare three positions, name the takes and leave with material you can judge tomorrow — without invented microphone tests.

Home recording advice often begins with a microphone model. The room and the position usually make the larger decision first. A modest microphone in a stable, quiet position gives you something you can compare. An expensive microphone moved between takes does not.

Prepare a room, not a vocal booth

A viola needs some distance for its radiating parts to blend. Surrounding it with absorbers at arm’s length can remove useful high-frequency life while leaving low-mid room problems untouched. Begin by controlling the strongest early reflections: a bare wall beside the instrument, a hard floor and a low ceiling.

Use ordinary, safe materials only where they will not fall toward the player or instrument. Turn off avoidable noise sources. Record thirty seconds of room tone before deciding the room is quiet.

Mark the performance position

Put small tape marks at the chair or standing position and microphone stand. Note capsule height, distance and angle in the take name or session log. DPA’s guidance stresses that bowed-string radiation is complex and placement needs experimentation. Repeatability makes that experimentation useful.

Record three deliberately different passes

  1. Blended: 60–100 cm away, above and in front, aimed toward the bridge area.
  2. Close: shorter distance for isolation and articulation, monitored for harshness and movement.
  3. Room-aware: farther back where the instrument sounds balanced to your ears, only if the room is quiet enough.

Use the same passage and preamp setting unless one position clips. Include low strings, a sustained phrase and clear attacks. Do not change strings, bow, chair or room treatment between passes.

Leave headroom for the bow, not only the rehearsal

Set gain from the loudest section you expect. A player may deliver more level on the final take than during a quick sound check. Digital headroom is cheap; clipped transients are not repairable.

Monitor with closed headphones at a moderate level. Listen for clipping, traffic, chair noise and cable movement. Tone decisions are better made later on speakers and level-matched headphones.

Name takes so the evidence survives

Use a structure such as piece_section_position_take: cueA_theme_close_T03. Keep a short note for distance and angle. Mark musical observations separately from technical ones. “Best emotion, chair squeak at 00:18” is more useful than five stars.

Comp first, process second

Choose phrases by performance before adding EQ and reverb. Edit on quiet boundaries or use short crossfades. Preserve the full takes. Then make a processing copy and address only problems you can name.

  • High-pass only as far as the arrangement allows; do not remove the instrument’s body by default.
  • Use narrow cuts for persistent room resonances only after checking another placement.
  • De-ess-style dynamic control can sometimes soften isolated bow brightness more transparently than a broad static cut.
  • Add room or reverb after the dry balance makes musical sense.

Archive a clean handoff

Keep full-resolution original takes, the comp, a processed version and a brief session note. Export from a common start point if the part will move to another DAW. A future mix engineer needs the dry recording and the intended sound, not only one irreversible file.

The session succeeds when you can reopen it next month, rebuild the chain and understand why one position was chosen. That is a stronger standard than whether the first recording sounded “professional” in isolation.
