Viola microphone placement: three useful starting positions

A source-based way to compare close, bridge-area and room-aware microphone positions without pretending that one distance works in every room.

How this guide was madeThis is a source-based placement guide, not a microphone shoot-out. The starting positions come from manufacturer education material and basic acoustic principles. No microphone is declared a winner, and no unrecorded sound example is implied.

A viola is not a point source. The bridge, top plate, f-holes, strings and the room all contribute, and they do not radiate every frequency in the same direction. That is why moving a microphone by twenty centimetres can change more than swapping one competent condenser for another.

The useful question is not “Where should a viola microphone go?” It is: which compromise do you need for this room, this player and this arrangement? Start with three clearly different positions, record the same passage, and choose by function rather than by how impressive one isolated note sounds.

Before moving the microphone

Make the comparison fair. Mark the player’s chair, keep the music stand in the same place, disable automatic gain and record every pass at the same resolution. Ask for a short passage that contains a sustained note, an attack-heavy phrase, a low string and a change of bow direction. A single long note hides too much.

  • Leave enough headroom for the loudest bow stroke.
  • Keep the microphone pattern unchanged between tests.
  • Listen level-matched. Louder almost always sounds better for the wrong reason.
  • Evaluate in the arrangement as well as solo. The brightest take may be the easiest to place under dialogue; it may also be tiring on its own.

Position 1: above and in front of the instrument

Place the microphone roughly 60–100 cm away, above the instrument and angled toward the bridge area. This is the broadest starting point: far enough for the parts of the instrument to begin blending, close enough that a domestic room does not completely take over.

Move higher if bow noise dominates. Move farther away if the result feels narrow or pinned to one part of the body. Move closer only after checking that the room, not the instrument, is the actual problem. Distance changes the direct-to-room balance; angle changes which parts of the radiation pattern reach the capsule.

This position often makes sense for exposed solo lines and small arrangements where the viola needs body as well as articulation. It demands a reasonably quiet room.

Position 2: closer to the bridge area

For separation, bring the microphone closer and aim around the bridge rather than directly into an f-hole. DPA’s educational material describes the bridge area as a place that captures both soundboard contribution and bow “bite”, while warning that close positions can become harsh. Treat that warning as part of the method.

A close position is useful when the room is noisy, when other musicians are playing nearby, or when the part must remain precise in a dense production. It also magnifies small movements. If the player turns, the tone can change; if a directional microphone moves closer, proximity effect may add low-frequency weight.

Do not repair an over-close recording by immediately adding a large reverb. First compare a slightly greater distance. Artificial space can add decay, but it cannot recreate the exact spectral blend that never reached the microphone.

Position 3: a room-aware alternative

If the room sounds useful, place the microphone 1.2–2 m away at roughly instrument height or a little above it. This is not automatically the “natural” position. It is a vote for the room. Reflections, low-frequency build-up and background noise become part of the recording.

Walk the room while the player performs. If one location gives a balanced instrument to your ears, put the microphone near that location and adjust from there. A rigid distance chart cannot account for a low ceiling, a hard side wall or an open doorway.

Choose the position by the job

For a documentary underscore, articulation and low noise may matter more than an expansive solo sound. For a recital video, the room and visual distance may be part of the performance. For a sample library, consistency across notes and dynamics matters more than one flattering phrase.

Keep the losing takes. Name them with distance, angle and pattern. The value of a microphone test is not proving that one position is universally right; it is giving you a map you can return to when the arrangement changes.
